| Abstract: |
This study examined the perceived usefulness of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and student engagement in relation to academic performance in Trigonometry among Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) Mathematics students at Don Carlos Polytechnic College. Specifically, it sought to determine the level of perceived usefulness of AI in terms of ease of use, effectiveness in learning core topics, and improvement of problem-solving skills. It also aims to assess student engagement in affective, behavioral, and cognitive dimensions, evaluate academic performance, and identify significant relationships among these variables. Employing a descriptive-correlational research design, the researchers administered a validated structured questionnaire to 37 second year BSED Mathematics students. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation. Findings revealed a high level of perceived usefulness of AI, with ease of use rated highest, followed by learning effectiveness and problem-solving enhancement. Student engagement was likewise high, particularly in affective engagement, indicating strong interest, enjoyment, and motivation in learning Trigonometry. Academic performance was generally satisfactory, reflecting acceptable mastery of concepts. However, correlation analysis showed no significant relationship between perceived usefulness of AI and academic performance, nor between student engagement and academic performance. Thus, the hypothesis stating significant relationships was rejected. This suggests that although students perceive AI tools positively and demonstrate high engagement, these factors do not necessarily translate into significantly higher academic performance in Trigonometry. Further studies are recommended to explore additional factors influencing academic performance in technology-assisted learning environments among undergraduate mathematics students in future. |
