Abstract: This research was conducted to investigate the perceptions and reasons of English as Second Language (ESL) teachers regarding their pedagogical use of code-switching in multilingual classrooms. Code-switching is a technique that entails alternating between multiple languages during teaching. Based in the Philippines, a nation with over 170 languages, this study focuses on the context of ‘Bislish’ or ‘Ceblish,’ which refers to the code-switching between Bisaya/Cebuano and English. Utilizing qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews with public school teachers from Cebuano backgrounds, the research had uncovered significant themes such as the improvement of student comprehension and engagement, alongside apprehensions regarding the potential hindrance to L2 proficiency. The results were analysed through the lens of Gile’s Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT), which illustrates how teachers’ code-switching practices embody strategies of convergence and divergence tailored to meet students’ linguistic requirement and the objectives of language education. The study concludes by also promoting the intentional application of code-switching in educational settings, offering suggestions for teacher training and future investigations to further examine its effects on language learning and students’ perspectives.
