| Abstract: |
The rapid proliferation of AI-mediated paraphrasing tools (AIPs) like QuillBot has disrupted conventional notions of academic integrity and authorial voice in higher education. While traditional institutional frameworks frequently categorize algorithmic rephrasing as a form of misconduct, second language (L2) writers increasingly rely on these tools to overcome structural linguistic barriers and achieve writing equity. To address this tension, this conceptual paper critiques the existing binary view of autonomous versus compromised authorship. Drawing upon the Academic Literacies Framework and Hyland’s metadiscourse theory, it introduces the AIP-Mediated Academic Literacy Model. This tri-phasic pedagogical framework shifts the locus of writing competence from mechanical word generation to critical evaluative judgment. By framing the human writer as an active editor-in-chief managing shared algorithmic agency, the model provides concrete pedagogical implications for process-oriented assessment and curriculum design, offering a resilient theoretical path forward for digital language education. |
