| Abstract: |
The population of the Hammerhead shark Sphyrna lewini which is included in the Sphytinidae spread especially in the Indian Ocean region, is thought to have been under pressure due to intensive fishing and trade, especially for its fins. Although the status of the population is not known with certainty, it is suspected that there has been a decline in S. Lewini species worldwide, one of which is in the waters of the Indian Ocean. In general, sharks are very vulnerable to overfishing pressure. The need for data and information related to S. Lewini is currently quite important considering its conservation status according to the Red List of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN Red List) is Endangered and according to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). the hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini) has been stated in part of Appendix II CITIES and IUNC – Endangered, where its existence is threatened with extinction. With the preventive steps taken by the government by issuing ministerial regulations no. 48 of 2016, it is expected that the trade and fishing of sharks in Indonesian waters can decrease. Various steps to protect sharks have been taken in various fields of science by voicing the potential of sharks for marine preservation, both in communities, co-management, government agencies, community organizations and large organizations |
