| Abstract: |
Developed by Michael Halliday in the 1960s, systemic functional grammar is a model of grammar which was part of a broad social semiotic approach to language called systemic linguistics. The key term “systemic” in this concept refers to the view of language as a network of systems, or interrelated sets of options for making meaning; the term “functional” indicates that the approach is concerned with meaning, as opposed to formal grammar, which focuses on word classes such as nouns and verbs, typically without reference beyond the individual clause. Using this framework, this article investigates Mark Halliday’s functional grammar in terms of three metafunctions and textual metafunction is the focus of the study. By studying and analyzing cohesive devices, the study helps to identify their realization in a scientific text. The subject of the study is a geography text taken from a coursebook for students of geography at Hanoi University of Education. To achieve the objective, the two main methods (descriptive and analytic) are used in order to investigate the structure and linguistic features of the text, including grammatical, lexical and rhetorical features. |
