Abstract: |
This study explores the lived experiences and challenges of multigrade teachers in the Philippines who balance their teaching responsibilities with pursuing graduate studies. Multigrade teaching, common in rural and underserved areas, requires one teacher to manage multiple grade levels simultaneously, which presents unique professional and personal challenges. Teachers face significant time, energy, and financial constraints as they juggle lesson planning, classroom management, academic requirements, and family responsibilities. Despite these difficulties, many are motivated by occupational development, seeking graduate education to enhance their teaching skills and career prospects. The study highlights adaptive coping strategies such as disciplined time management, peer support, and resilience, which help teachers manage their dual roles. However, participants emphasize the need for more relevant, flexible, and context-specific professional development programs, as well as institutional support including financial assistance and emotional encouragement. These findings align with both local and international research, underscoring the global nature of multigrade teachers’ challenges and the critical importance of tailored support systems. The study concludes that to sustain the professional growth and well-being of multigrade teachers, policies and programs must address their unique circumstances by providing flexible graduate study options, adequate resources, and strong support networks. Such comprehensive support is essential to ensure that multigrade teachers can continue delivering quality education while advancing their professional development. |
