Abstract: |
This qualitative study investigates the conscious decisions of stable professionals in the Philippines to remain unmarried, aiming to understand their motivations, lived experiences, and the social meanings they attach to voluntary singlehood. This research seeks to: (1) to explore the underlying reasons why stable professionals choose to remain single; (2) to examine their experiences and perceptions as unmarried professionals; and (3) to analyse advice to professionals who are considering remaining single, based on their own journey. Employing a phenomenological approach and semi-structured questionnaires, the research reveals that prioritizing personal growth, independence, and emotional well-being are central motivations for remaining single. Participants highlight career advancement, financial stability, and self-improvement as key factors, while some cite emotional healing and self-protection following negative relationship experiences. The study also notes the role of personal identity and fulfilment, including perspectives from the LGBTQ community. Findings suggest that singlehood among stable professionals is a deliberate, self-defined choice rooted in autonomy and personal values, rather than societal pressure or circumstance. These insights challenge traditional narratives about marriage and well-being, positioning singlehood as a valid and empowering lifestyle. The research addresses a gap in the literature by providing culturally relevant, qualitative insights into the experiences of Filipino professionals, contributing to a broader understanding of singlehood in contemporary society.
