Abstract: It is not a new issue when discussing the difficulties and the challenges for non-professional students to achieve B1 level in Vietnam. This study focuses on the difficulties and challenges that TUEBA’s students in accounting department have to face to achieve the standards-based proficiency level required by the National Foreign Language Project 2020. According to requirements of The Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), non- English majored students at universities on graduation must achieve at least level B1 of CEFR (level 3 of the 6 levels of CEFR or VSTEP). In order to reach this goal, a detailed pathway for short-term and long-term periods need to be designed by universities, including TUEBA. In this article, the difficulties and challenges are listed and the primary ways are recommended for students at TUEBA to choose to fulfil their English level. As a result, an appropriate approach to the non-English majored curriculum for TUEBA is recommended, so that the students are able to reach the destination requested by MOET and beyond the goal.
