Abstract: |
This study explores the professional experiences of non-binary teachers in the Philippines, focusing on their motivations, challenges, and sources of support within educational settings. Findings reveal that non-binary educators are driven by a profound sense of purpose, viewing teaching as a vocation to positively influence students, promote respect, and foster societal change. Despite facing obstacles such as misgendering, misunderstanding, and adherence to traditional gender norms, participants exhibit resilience and authenticity in their roles. Support systems—including family, friends, colleagues, school administrators, and LGBTQ+ networks—are crucial in sustaining their well-being and professional growth. Non-binary teachers emphasize the importance of self-acceptance, setting personal boundaries, and seeking supportive communities to navigate their careers effectively. They advocate for a balance between professionalism and authenticity, encouraging peers to embrace their identities while upholding integrity in their work. The study underscores the need for educational institutions and policymakers to implement inclusive policies and practices, ensuring safer and more welcoming environments for non-binary educators. Such efforts are essential for empowering non-binary teachers to thrive and contribute meaningfully to student development and the broader educational community. |
