ABSTRACT
Data from tests can be informative. Learners in the Philippines scored very low in achievement tests particularly in Mathematics whether administered by international or national entities. Hence, an evaluation on the alignment of the written, implemented, and assessed curriculum for Mathematics in the Department of Education (DepEd) is considered. The implementation of the learning competencies in the Curriculum Guide and the Teaching-Learning Activities (TLAs) and assessments in the Daily Lesson Log were analyzed based on the 21st Century Skills tested in the National Achievement Test. Results showed that in all grade levels, competencies under Problem Solving skills, Analyzing Outcomes subskill, Predict Outcome indicator, were Highly Represented, and TLAs and assessments were Highly Practiced and Highly Observed, respectively. However, Information Literacy skill competencies, Identifying Types of Information subskill, Interprets questions or forms to provide appropriate information indicator, were Moderately Represented for Grade 6 while Critical Thinking skill competencies, Analyzing Relevance subskill, Drawing only on relevant information indicator, were Moderately Represented for Grade 10. In Information Literacy skill, TLAs and assessments were Not Practiced and Not Observed, respectively, while for Critical Thinking skill, TLAs were Moderately Practiced and Assessments were Moderately Observed. DepEd may provide relevant trainings on Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) and technology. The 21st century skills might be given emphasis in the crafting of competencies and take into account the alignment of competencies in the curriculum with achievement test. |
