Abstract: Disaster preparedness has been a challenge to institutions and even governments at large. When the Covid 19 pandemic started making headlines in Wuhan, China, very few academics and students ever thought that all academic and social operations would be suspended or stopped, especially in Africa and even Europe. This paper intends to highlight the challenges faced by two universities due to lack of a disaster preparedness plan under the grim times of Covid 19. Universities were in a state of panic because of Covid 19 (invisible enemy) prompting the suspension of face to face learning as statistics of Covid 19 in Africa continued to surge. Instantly there was a Lockdown, schools, universities, and all operations suspended except for critical services. There was no plan in place as to how learning would take place during the lockdown. It is against this background that this paper argues that lack of disaster preparedness in universities became a source of confusion and uncertainty among students. Data was generated through student surveys, emails from concerned students, communication with lecturers and management from the two universities. The data generated is critical in setting up centres for disaster preparedness in institutions of higher learning. Data generated was organised and analysed according to selected themes.
