Abstract: This paper examines fundamental categories connected to the development of teacher identity in foreign language teaching (e.g., communities of practice and affordances). The first step is to study the definitions of teacher identity, autonomy, communities of practice, and affordances. A hypothetical interconnection between those ideas is also depicted. We propose that, while teacher autonomy, teacher identity, and affordances are best considered as different notions, their interrelationship is complicated, iterative, dynamic, interactive, and non-linear, based on an examination of those ideas. The contextual elements that encourage or hinder the development of teacher autonomy and teachers' capacity to perceive affordances in a community are linked to the formation of teacher identity. It is implied that there is a need to investigate the community in which instructors are placed, as well as their communities of practice. We hope to elicit greater conversation on teacher identity from the viewpoints of communities of practice and affordances through the issues offered in this chapter.
