Abstract: |
Groundwater has become the major source of water to meet the requirements of domestic, industrial and irrigation sectors in West Bengal in the last few decades on account of its ubiquitous occurrence, easy availability and reliability. These qualities have led to its indiscriminate exploitation without due regard to recharging options which resulted in considerable depletion of groundwater table in some areas causing concerns for the long-term sustainability. Besides anthropogenic activities, decrease in annual as well as monsoonal rainfall in West Bengal experienced over the past few years has also added to its shortages. Artificial Recharge to groundwater through scientifically designed structures shall be a viable option for replenishment of the groundwater resources. It is the planned, human activity of augmenting the amount of ground water available through works designed to increase the natural replenishment or percolation of surface water into the groundwater aquifers, resulting in a corresponding increase in the amount of groundwater available for abstraction. It provides an opportunity to utilize the surplus monsoon runoff which otherwise is lost to the sea unutilized. This paper aims at pointing out the effectiveness and relevance of the various methods of Artificial Groundwater Recharge as suggested by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), Govt. of India in relevance to Indian context and their promising future. |
