Abstract: |
Some of the common problems faced by students with solo parents in the classroom, the parent may have to work long hours to make ends meet, leaving little time for involvement in their child’s education. This lack of parental involvement can affect the child’s academic progress and make them feel neglected. This study utilized a descriptive-correlational research design. It would determine the extent of involvement of solo parents in terms of parenting styles, participation of educational activities and quality time spent. It would also determine the level of cognitive skills in terms of problem solving, critical thinking skills and language skills. The result revealed that the extent of involvement of solo parents on learner’s cognitive skills in terms parenting style, participation of educational activities and quality time spent were greatly involved. The level of cognitive skills among Learners in terms of problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills and language skills were greatly involved. Another result showed that participation in educational activities shows a significant positive correlation with problem-solving skills among learners, parenting style and quality time spent do not exhibit statistically significant correlations with problem-solving skills. Parenting style shows a statistically significant negative correlation with critical thinking skills among learners, participation in educational activities and quality time spent do not exhibit statistically significant correlations with critical thinking skills. While participation in educational activities shows a statistically significant positive correlation with language skills among learners, parenting style and quality time spent do not exhibit statistically significant correlations with language skills. This suggests that government and non-government organizations should provide support and resources for solo parents to help them balance their responsibilities as a parent and provider. This can include access to affordable childcare, financial assistance, and educational programs. |
