Abstract: |
This research study identified the language learning gaps in speaking and writing of high school students after the Covid-19 Pandemic. The study employed hermeneutic phenomenological research design. The population was consisted of senior high school students. The sample for this study were twenty (20) Grade 12 students of Stella Matutina Academy of Bukidnon, Inc. enrolled in S.Y. 2023 – 2024 selected purposively from three strands: Six (6) students were selected from Accountancy and Business Management (ABM) strand and seven (7) students were selected each from Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) strand and Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) strand. The researchers conducted an in-depth interview and made use of semi-structured interview questionnaire. The data acquired from personal interviews was analyzed using thematic analysis. The results showed that there were significant effects of online class to students’ language proficiency. Online class affects the speaking skills of the students in content, pronunciation or articulation, fluency and organization of ideas aspects. Writing was also affected in terms of content quality, word choice, spelling, and grammar. Based on the findings of the study, it is important for educators to develop programs aiding students' transition from online to face to face learning. More programs and speaking and writing skills development should be given emphasis in the order to bridge the speaking and writing gaps created by online class during the pandemic. |
