Abstract: |
This research investigates the effects of morphological transfer on the English writing skills of indigenous senior high school students from Lurugan National High School. Particularly, the study focused on 5 Talaandig learners, through the lens of Selinker’s Interlanguage Theory (1972). The study identified prevalent morphological mistakes in their writing, such as difficulties with verb tense and aspect, pluralization and count nouns, affixation, and subject-verb agreement. The result had underscored the impact of the students’ first language (L1) on their second language (L2) English writing, revealing instances of linguistic interference. Additionally, this research also examined the students’ tendency in relying on translation as a strategy, which frequently resulted in grammatical inaccuracies. This study further recommends that explicit grammar teaching, an understanding of the differences between L1 and L2, a balanced approach to translation, and focused feedback can effectively mitigate these issues. |
