Abstract: |
The affordances engendered by the use of digital devices and media to promote collaborative classroom experiences are increasingly being recognised as part of today’s educational practice. Teachers are becoming aware of extra possibilities for learners to do a lot more on their own and construct knowledge using the instruments at their disposal. This study explores how digital devices and media enable collaboration in selected Literature classrooms in Gauteng, South Africa and whether it can be assumed that the presence of technological tools means the traditional classroom is a thing of the past. The study is anchored on the constructivist learning approach which believes that learners do not passively receive knowledge but construct it through certain activities which include collaboration and creating their own community of practice as learners. The study adopts a qualitative research approach. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data while thematic content analysis was the tool for analysis. The findings show that in the participating settings, digital devices and media are increasingly being adopted for collaborative purposes though this is yet to deepen its roots in the classroom, and a wider range of tools and media is yet to be adopted. |
