Abstract: |
Navigating the path to school leadership in the Philippines involves overcoming the formidable challenge of the National Qualifying Examination for School Heads (NQESH), with only 32% of examinees passing nationwide and a 30% success rate in Valencia City in 2023. These outcomes point to the significant demands placed on candidates and the pressing need for strong support mechanisms. Despite evidence that structured review programs and mentorship can enhance preparedness, the nuanced experiences of successful examinees have not been fully explored. This study addresses that gap by examining the narratives of six recent NQESH passers from Valencia City, utilizing a descriptive phenomenological approach. Data were collected through in-depth, face-to-face interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi's method.
Participants recounted navigating intense stress, self-doubt, and fatigue throughout their preparation, yet consistently demonstrated resilience and adaptability. Effective strategies included disciplined time management, structured study plans, and clear prioritization, enabling them to balance exam preparation with professional and personal obligations. Social and spiritual support—particularly encouragement from peers, family, and the practice of prayer—emerged as vital for sustaining motivation and emotional well-being.
The findings indicate that success in the NQESH extends beyond academic mastery, requiring a combination of resilience, organization, and purposeful preparation. The study underscores the importance of holistic support systems, including mentorship, targeted review programs, and wellness resources, to better equip future school leaders for the multifaceted demands of principalship. These insights offer valuable direction for the development of targeted interventions and policy enhancements, with further research recommended to broaden the scope and assess the long-term impact of such supports on educational leadership effectiveness.
