Abstract: This study explores the perceptions and lived experiences of Umayamnon learners’ journey in escaping from early marriage tradition to transformation in the aspect of pursuing education. The primary focus is on exploring the Umayamnon learners’ reasons for pursuing education instead of complying with early marriage traditions. The study was conducted at Father Leoni Memorial School Incorporated, Cabanglasan, Bukidnon, on April 20, 2024, and was administered to five learners who were being helped by Bawey Te Binhi Te Pegleum (BTBTP) as respondents. The researchers craft their own questionnaire and have it pilot tested before gathering data. The results of the study show themes based on their responses to each question. Their firm decisions indicate a willingness to take risks, to transform, and to be educated, even if their acts seem to invalidate their tradition. Respondents view early marriage tradition as a vital part of preserving their ancestral heritage, but it hinders and limits their personal and professional growth as a person. It declines more opportunities that they could avail of than what they have enjoyed right now. Empowering young people through education could be an effective approach to facilitating meaningful change within the Umayamnon community, where the Local Government Unit (LGU) connects to the Indigenous People Program in Charge, or the IPMR, to organize programs such as orientations for lumads, especially their elders, seminars on pursuing education as it could transform lives, and even educational scholarship grants to support learners with this unending dilemma.
