Abstract:	The mutually reinforcing relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and economic growth has been a matter of dispute with many inconclusive empirical studies, especially at the sectorial level. This research examines FDI inflows in three main sectors – Agriculture, Industry, and Services – to find out how the difference of each sector’s conditions influences the bi-causal relationship between FDI and growth in each sector. It takes advantage of a simultaneous equation model and three-stage least squares (3SLS) method to test separately the FDI-led growth and growth-driven FDI hypotheses. The data are collected from six ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations) countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, from 1990 to 2010. It is found that the effects of FDI on sectorial economic growth of the six ASEAN countries, and vice versa, are really different across sectors. The bi-causal relationship between FDI and the economic growth certainly exists in the Services sector only, whereas the conclusion is ambiguous for the case of the Industry sector, and it appears not to occur in the Agriculture sector.
