| Abstract: |
The role of discourse analysis is greatly essential in expressing thoughts and ideas. Nowadays, people around the world communicate their ideas through stretches of language, thus in order to better understand any discourse, it must achieve cohesion. However, the studies which focus on analyzing the discourse analysis capacity of written English have been still limited. Therefore, our research team conducted a study in form of written discourse analysis on a group of 20 students at a public university in Vietnam in order to investigate the current situation of using cohesive devices as well as emphasize the necessity of using these devices in English narrative essays. The results show that there is a dominance of using conjunction, reference and lexical cohesion in students’ writing. In contrast, there is little evidence of utilizing ellipsis and substitution than other cohesion devices. The study also suggests that during the teaching process, besides presenting some basic writing templates, teachers should give more emphasise on the importance of cohesive devices and show students how the native speakers achieve cohesive devices in texts. |
