| Abstract: |
This paper examined the impact of oil production and environmental degradation on economic development in Nigeria for the sample period of 1980 – 2018. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag modelling (ARDL) technique was used to examine the relationship among the variables. Findings from the model revealed that there is was direct and significant relationship between oil revenue and exchange rate on economic development while openness and CO2 emissions had direct but insignificant relationship with economic development in the long run. There was a direct and significant relationship between the independent variables and economic development in the short run. The study therefore recommended that effective regulation of oil production activities with the use of stiff sanctions (economic instruments). Also, efficient oil revenue management be vigorously pursued through deepening the sovereign national wealth fund to cushion the effects of global shocks such as the COVID-19 pandemic and oil price shocks. |
