| Abstract: |
Indigenous knowledge held by ethnic minority communities in mountain regions plays a key role in the conservation and sustainable use of medicinal plant resources. This study examines the traditional ecological knowledge of H'mong people in Sin Suoi Ho, Lai Chau province, with a particular focus on the identification, harvesting, use and preservation of local medicinal plant species. Through field surveys, semi-structured interviews and participatory observations, we have documented a total of 96 plant species, of which 66 have been identified and 30 remain unidentified, which are often used in local health care practices. The H'Mông people's practice of collecting medicinal herbs is shaped by a combination of functional utility, household needs, market demand, transfer of knowledge from other villagers, and experience. The findings highlight the importance of indigenous practices in preserving biodiversity, promoting community health and creating economic opportunities. However, this body of knowledge is under increasing threat from modernization and from overexploitation of natural resources. The paper advocates the integration of indigenous knowledge systems into national conservation strategies and advocates community-based models as a path to sustainable development. |
