Abstract: |
This study investigates the motivations, challenges, support systems, and recommendations of higher-ranking Department of Education teachers in the Philippines who migrate to teach overseas. This phenomenon disrupts instructional quality, leadership continuity, and school stability, particularly in socio-economically challenged regions. Despite growing awareness, there is a lack of focused research on the specific experiences of higher-ranking DepEd teachers who pursue international teaching careers.
The study aims to fill this knowledge gap by exploring the complex interplay of professional, personal, and systemic factors influencing these teachers' decisions to migrate. Employing a qualitative narrative inquiry approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with selected higher-ranking DepEd teachers from the Division of Bukidnon, focusing on a district with high teacher migration rates.
Findings reveal that teachers are motivated by professional growth, improved compensation, and cultural exposure but face challenges such as cultural adjustment, language barriers, and emotional strain. Support systems, including school-based collaboration, mentorship, and community involvement, are crucial for successful adaptation. Participants recommend thorough preparation, cultural sensitivity, and building support networks for aspiring overseas teachers.
This research contributes valuable insights for policymakers and educational leaders to develop targeted interventions addressing teacher retention and support. Future studies could expand to other divisions and incorporate quantitative methods to enhance generalizability and inform comprehensive policy reforms aimed at sustaining the Philippine education workforce.
