Abstract
Research Area: Education
KeyWord: language games, grammar, attitudes
Abstract: Grammar is believed to be among the key elements of a language and it is essential for foreign language learners to master its grammar to communicate precisely and confidently. However, learning English as a foreign language in general and learning English grammar in particular still pose certain challenges for students from Vietnamese mountainous areas. With a hope to improve these students’ grammatical competence, this paper aims at investigating their attitudes towards the implementation of language games in their grammar classroom. Guided by the primary research question concerning how learners perceive game activities in their grammar lessons, the research employed an action research design in ten weeks. The participants were 38 first-year English majors from School of Foreign Languages, Thai Nguyen University, Vietnam, and the data were extracted from an endline questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The findings suggest that the learners demonstrated positive views towards the language games employed in their classrooms and acknowledged the effects of these games on their grammar learning.
