Abstract: |
This study delves into the experiences of parents teaching fundamental reading skills to their kindergarten children. It showcases their engagement, support, experiences along with the challenges and opportunities they encounter while supporting their child's reading skills. The research involved five parents of learners in Musuan Integrated School of school year 2024–2025.
A qualitative phenomenological method was utilized to answer the objective of the study. Specifically, a semi-structured interview was conducted to gather the narrative of the parents. The findings revealed that parents who are actively engaged in consistent reading activities and used instructional or digital strategies such as phonics, storytelling and other resources are frequently making personal sacrifices to support their children's literacy. Parents face common challenges such as limited time, lack of resources, and the varying attention spans of children, parents exhibited resilience and adaptability. Furthermore, opportunities like strengthened parent-child relationships, improved communication, and collaboration with educators were emphasized as elements that contributed to successful literacy outcomes.
The study concludes that providing parents with practical strategies, emotional support, and readily accessible learning materials is essential for improving literacy instruction at home. It recommends the creation of school-led initiatives and partnerships that acknowledge and enhance the vital role of parents in the development of early reading capabilities.
