Abstract: |
This study investigated the lived experience of the STEM students at Tongantongan National High School. A qualitative phenomenological approach was used to gather data using semi-structured interviews. It was seen that AI has become deeply instilled in students' lives, helping them in different academic tasks such as assignments, projects, and mathematical problem-solving. The findings reveal a notable reliance on AI tools, with students expressing familiarity and ease of use, particularly with the ChatGPT language generator, which emerged as the most commonly utilized AI tool due to its user-friendly interface. The trend of AI in education and difficulties in time management were identified as two of the challenges that STEM students are facing. Although the use of AI tools has been a great help in making tasks easier and more convenient, students have also created a way to strategize their AI utilization with enough knowledge to identify the risks that AI brings and to strive to strike a balance. This research study aimed to describe and identify the role of AI in STEM education. In addition, researchers have found that encouraging students to complete assignments without relying on AI can enhance learning effectiveness by fostering independence. They suggest that teachers should promote self-reliance in students rather than dependence on AI tools. This research sheds light on students’ experiences using AI in STEM education, offering insight and recommendations into AI advantages while addressing the potential risks. |
