| Abstract: |
The objective of this descriptive cross-sectional study is to study the main obstacles to the early diagnosis of breast cancer in patients consulting at the stage of locally advanced or metastatic cancer and to describe the epidemiological characteristics of women with breast cancer and their evolution.
It was carried out by interrogation, among women suffering from breast cancer and hospitalized in the medical oncology department of the Oran University Hospital. 60 patients were interviewed whose average age was 48 years, with extremes 30 and 70 years. Poor socio-economic conditions are at the origin of 20% of late consultations and most mentioned a personal reason for the delay in diagnosis. Ignorance of the telltale signs of breast cancer dominates the distribution of causes of late diagnosis. The 24% of cases the delay would be due to a lack of medical care. Fear of mastectomy and death was the cause of this delay in 63% of women. Thus, there are three types of delay: the delay inherent in the patient, the delay inherent in the doctors and the delay related to care.
