| Abstract: |
Media, often heralded as democracy's fourth pillar, serves as a vigilant overseer for democracy's foundational structures. The concept of self-regulation, or self-discipline, stands in stark contrast to excess and is fundamental to both individual conduct and the smooth operation of society. The media's role extends to mitigating white-collar crimes by exposing the malpractices of affluent business magnates, corrupt officials, and celebrities who attempt to bypass legal proceedings through bribery. It vigilantly exposes reprehensible acts and plays a pivotal role in revealing significant frauds perpetrated by governments or officials. The digital media landscape, characterized by low entry barriers, minimal restrictions, ambiguous definitions of online journalism, and the absence of a dedicated self-Regulatory organization, underscores the pressing need for policy overhaul. This paper aims to examine the regulation of online news media in India, offering a critical evaluation of self-regulation practices. |
