| Abstract: |
Listening skill is one of the most necessary skills to communicate in life. It is more and more essential to learn this kind of receptive skill in learning a foreign language. Everybody knows that listening to a message is not as simple as hearing it, so the listener has to understand it and respond with the right message. The present study was conducted to determine how the students' use of listening strategies affects their listening competence. The subjects selected by purposive sampling were 98 first-year non-English significant students studying at Thai Nguyen University of Technology (TNUT). In order to achieve the objectives of the study, data collecting techniques such as questionnaires and tests were utilized. The results found common listening strategies the practical and less effective students at TNUT used to develop their English listening skills and showed the correlation between students' use of listening strategies and their listening competence. In addition, several implications that support students in developing their listening skills have also been suggested. |
