Abstract: This paper studies the propagation of the subprime crisis on the real spheres of developed and emerging countries. This propagation is measured by the significant growth in the relationships between financial and activity variables after the bursting of the crisis. We then suggest a VAR model where the propagation of the crisis is measured by the stock market and banking shocks affecting household consumption and industrial production. Our estimation considers an observation period that is subdivided into two sub-periods in order to better capture the effect of the crisis : a quiet period and a crisis period. Our results show that the liquidity crises and stock market crashes generated by the subprime crisis have had a strong negative impact on the world economy, manifested by a sharp decline in consumption and a slowdown in private initiatives
