| Abstract: |
This study aims to investigate how the current structure of the board of directors affects the efficiency and profitability of the banks by using Fixed Effects Model with Driscoll and Kraay (1998) standard error and Random Effects Model with robust option. Using a sample of 16 listed commercial banks in Vietnam from 2010 to 2019, the results indicate that there is a negative relationship between the proportion of independent directors and firm performance. Meanwhile, the average age and educational level of board members have positive impacts on ROE and ROA of the banks. Other characteristics of board structure, such as CEO Duality, Board gender, and board size witness no significant correlation with the two profitability indicators. These results are consistent with previous empirical studies to some extent but the overall relationship between board structure and firm performance is still not clear and in need of further investigation. |
